Backflow prevention is also know as cross connection control. Backflow prevention devices keep contaminated water from flowing back into the main water system. Contaminated water is kept out of the system by a set of valves which close when backflow occurs.

Backflow is often caused by a drop in pressure on the supply side. The drop in pressure causes a vacuum which can pull water back into the system if a Reduced Pressure Detector Assembly backflow prevention device is not present.

Each backflow-prevention assembly required by Arizona ARS 18-4-115 section shall be tested at least annually, and more frequently if directed by the water supplier or the Department. Each assembly shall also be tested after installation, relocation or repair.
